Reporting a code that will not scan#

These reports are genuinely useful, and a few details make them solvable rather than mysterious. Where you can, include:

  • The type of code — link, Wi-Fi, contact card or text
  • The phone and operating system version you scanned with
  • The printed size of the code, and what it was printed on
  • The error correction level you used
  • Whether it scans on screen but fails on paper, which usually points to size or contrast

Commercial use#

You do not need permission to use codes from this site commercially, and there is no licence fee or attribution requirement. If your procurement process needs that in writing, email and we will send it. The terms of service already say so, and can be linked in a supplier questionnaire.

Questions we can usually answer quickly#

  • Why is my code so dense? Almost always too much content. Contact cards and long tracking URLs are the usual culprits; the contact card page explains which fields cost the most.
  • Can you disable a code someone made? No, and neither can anyone else. Static codes carry their content inside the pattern, so there is no switch to flip. The legal notice covers what we can do instead.
  • Can I get scan statistics? Not from a static code. Counting scans requires a redirect owned by somebody, which is the trade-off described on the about page.
  • Do you have an API? Not yet. Tell us what you would use it for and it helps us prioritise.

What we cannot help with#

We cannot tell you what an unknown QR code contains without seeing it, recover a code you have lost, or identify who created one. If you are worried a code is fraudulent, do not scan it — type the address manually if you can read it, and report it using the details in the legal notice.

Accessibility problems#

We treat these as bugs rather than feature requests. The accessibility statement lists what we have already tested and the limitations we know about.

Abuse and phishing#

If you have received a QR code that leads somewhere harmful, the legal notice explains where to report it and what we can realistically do about a static code.

Press and partnerships#

Use the same address and mention what it is about in the subject line. How the site is funded is set out on the disclosure page.
